"I've done this trip twice and would welcome the chance to do it again. What better escape from winter weather than a week with horses in sunny Nosara!
I'm not sure which I liked better, the immersive experience of lessons with Wendy or leaving the Playa Ponies stables with the horses to explore the countryside. We rode on the beach, along the river, through the jungle, up the mountain, down the dry river bed, and through the community.
The pace was gentle so we could take in the sights and sounds, see the occasional monkey in the trees, and relax. Good food, yoga, and swimming helped keep us fit. The horses were well cared for and knew how to navigate both the terrain and the barking dogs, loose equines, motorbikes etc. that are part of the local scene."
About Wendy Murdoch &
Horsing Around International, LLC
Wendy is a noted horsewoman, instructor, clinician, author and inventor. She is the creator of the SURE FOOT Equine Stability Program® and SURE FOOT Balance Pads. Wendy went on her first African safari in 1998 and again in 1999 with Mary Robinson, founder of Horsing Around International.
Wendy met Mary at a Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness Clinic (TEAM) in Florida taught by Linda's sister, Robyn Hood, in 1996. Together, Wendy and Mary organized five saddle safaris before Mary retired from the travel business and turned Horsing Around International's reins over to Wendy in 2012.
Wendy, along with her life partner, Brad Schneider, has continued to bring adventurous horsemen and women to Kenya to experience the magic of the Masai Mara. To date, Wendy has conducted 12 safaris over the past 16 years. Wendy considers the Church's and Safari Unlimited crew as her "Kenyan family", many of whom have been with her on every safari since 2008.
In 2018, Wendy added riding retreats in Nosara, Costa Rica. Between 2018 and 2020, she taught seven riding retreats, until COVID interrupted the schedule. Wendy is thrilled once again to be able to offer riding retreats in this amazing location. She has reconnected with her retreat partner, Playa Ponies, and looks forward to galloping on the beach once again.
Playa Ponies is a family-owned and operated business. Carrie Anderson is our host, along with her family: husband Neno, their daughters Mayalin and Eva, and their dogs, cats, goats, and chickens. They all ride and maintain a stable of horses for lessons and tours. Everyone at Playa Ponies loves to share "Pura Vida" or the "simple life" with their guests. The simple life includes the amazing Costa Rican culture, the breathtaking natural beauty of the landscape, the revitalizing Pacific Ocean, and the local cuisine of Costa Rica.
PS: Stay tuned for more locations. Horsing Around International is looking for adventure! Wendy loves to partner with outstanding outfitters and share these amazing experiences with anyone looking for adventure. She hopes to see you on her next Ride of Your Life.

Daily Yoga Practice
Focus Body and Mind
Nosara, Costa Rica is synonymous with Yoga.
Yoga improves flexibility, balance, and core stability, all of which help riders achieve a secure and effective seat in the saddle.
Breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques help riders manage stress, enhance focus, and cultivate a deeper connection with their equine partners. This ultimately leads to greater harmony and a more rewarding riding experience.
Horses Hand-Picked To Match Your
Ability & Personality
Horses For All Ability Levels
The horses at Playa Ponies are "Costa Rican Chill" - calm, reliable, and experienced on the beach, in the jungle, on the trail, and around traffic.
The herd is composed of various breeds including crossbred Criollo, Warmblood, Arabian, and Quarter Horse bloodlines. Criollo is a breed derived from horses that arrived with the Spanish in the 1500s. They average 15 hands and are sturdy, athletic, and sure-footed. Instead of carrots, they love mangos, and are sure to win your heart!
Delicious Culinary Delights
Costa Rican Cuisine
Enjoy a vibrant infusion of indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients in every dish. The local staple is "gallo pinto" a flavorful combination of rice and black beans, often served with eggs, cheese or meat.
Tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and papaya are abundant and frequently used. Seafood plays a significant role, with dishes like "ceviche" being popular and truly delicious. Costa Rican cuisine is known for its simple yet satisfying flavors that highlight the country's natural bounty.
Costa Rican Culture and Conservation
Pura Vida Culture
Nosara, a charming coastal town, is known for its strong sense of community and dedication to environmental conservation. The locals, a mix of native Costa Ricans and expatriates, have created a tight-knit, supportive atmosphere that welcomes visitors with open arms.

The town's laid-back vibe and shared passion for conservation foster a unique camaraderie among its inhabitants, making Nosara a truly special place.
